OK, so the truck I was looking at ended up being rusted so it was a NO.
SO
I have the full faith of OPPO to trust a Sierra/Silverado at 130-150k miles. I assume that carries to the Yukon/Tahoe/Suburban line ups as well.
But does it carry to the GMC Envoy Denali?
I emphasize that I am looking at a Denali because it gets you the 5.3L V8 that appears in all those other above mentioned trucks.
I’m also aware it’s built off of the GMT360 platform as opposed to the GMT800(/820/830) platform that the above all rode on.
What say you OPPO?
(oh, it’s only 5500 bucks. 150k miles. 4x4, selectable not AWD)

That era of GM can be either gold or turds. The motor and trans should be durable but the rear end is a little fragile and the interiors are junk. should be pretty reliable though I would guess.

Fucking barf. All the weight and negative handling aspects of a truck, but without the utility. Boo and hiss for that ugly lump of American steel and plastic.

Harsh bro. 21mpg highway sounds nice in a vehicle this size. I actually dig the look of the interior in it too:

My neighbor abuses the ever loving shit out of his I6 Envoy and it just keeps going and going and going. I know quite a few people who haven’t had any major issues with theirs. The envoy interior is fair bit better than the Trailblazers too. The weak point as with all GMs of that era is gonna be the transmission.

I’m actually liking the look of the interior. I mean, I can’t feel it through a picture but still:
Fragile rear end is worrisome. It has a max tow in the 6,000's I was hoping to pull a 5000 pound camper once a year with it.

You say that like anyone who purchases a GMT360 cares about that. Don’t get me wrong, I agree, but this is the ultimate mommy-mobile we’re talking about. And no one cares less about driving dynamics when TIMMY STOP HITTING YOUR SISTER RIGHT NOW I WILL TURN THIS CAR AROUND AND TAKE AWAY YOUR XBOX

I don’t think you will have any trouble with towing a trailer like that, just be easy on overloading the truck and careful with the power mods.

I’d see if I could find any Saab 9-7xs at that price point. They get a lot more goodies, plus SAAB. The Arc model comes with the 5.3, usually the aluminum block HO version. The Aero, however, is a TBSS that looks better with an LS2 and a 4L65e instead of a 4L60e, IIRC, and the 4L65e is a much stronger trans.

The interior appears to be light years beyond the trailblazers. If it looked like the trailblazer inside it would’ve been crossed off the list in an instant.

I pulled a ~4200lb travel trailer with mine (4.2) a few years ago. It was not fun. Had enough power (the 5.3 would be plenty), but it was just a bear to pull something so much taller and longer than the Envoy.

It’s a GM small block so it’ll probably run forever. The interior is much better than it looks in pictures, though it is mid 2000s GM so it’s not *amazing*, plenty of room for stuffs in the back, transmission is the obvious weak point for the mid naughts GM vehicle but it should last if it’s been this long. 4x4 has a true low range iirc so it definitely helps in the snow. Rear wiper motors can fail but that’s true for anything with a rear wiper. Overall they’re pretty good little trucks. Still miss the Envoy my grandparents had.

I don’t do power mods to daily drivers.
If I have extra money for power mods, that would all be moved to the Montego account.

Looks like I’d have to get a 7 pin trailer plug put on though (or install myself if I can)

fair nuff, though I agree with Jcarr, if you are towing something with a lot of frontal area/side area...its probably not the best tow rig around.

To be fair, I didn’t have a WD hitch. I’m sure that would have helped quite a bit.
The Envoy should have 7-pin standard. I have a cheap 7 to 4 pin adapter that I use when pulling small stuff.

I mean, it just seems like a ton of SUV for only 5500 bucks and I only tow once a year so I won’t be working the trans that hard.
I drove Blazers with true 4x4 high and low for a total of about 8 years and I only ever used low once and that one time i was in a snowbank up to my hood (yeah, stupid teen antics go listen to the untitled car show episode if you want to hear how that happened lol)

I believe this summer when I tow my in-laws camper my only other option for a tow vehicle will be a RWD V6 Mercury Mountaineer with a max tow of 5000 pulling a 5000 pound (when empty) camper. It’s about the same size as the one Jcarr referenced.
I’d be a lot more comfortable in this because it would have an extra 1000 capacity. I really like to leave at least a 1000 pound capacity gap to the max limit. My in laws don’t seem nearly as concerned (I fully expect a phone call one day “our trans blew in the Mountaineer, what do you think happened?!”)
It’s about a 2 hour ride or a smidge over 100 miles and it’s entirely flat so at least I’m not towing up a mountain for 8 hours or something.
I’d obviously be more comfortable in a full size like one of the pickups or the full size GM SUV’s

Yeah it should be fine then. Theirs was never used as a tow rig because my grandfather has a full size 1 ton for the tow duties so the Envoy was always a daily car for my grandmother and when they weren’t towing. Had about 90K miles when they finally traded it for the Equinox. No major issues in those 8 years.

In the case of no mountains, I wouldn’t be too worried. Crosswinds will be a treat but other than that i think you would be fine. I prefer the tow vehicle to outweight the trailer but thats not always the case and as long as you are paying attention its totally safe and doable.

My aunt and uncle had one with the I6 and it was super nice and never gave them any trouble. I think they eventually traded it for another Avalanche (because that’s what they do... they own 3 of those things).
Anyways, with the added power of the 5.3L over the I6, you should be fine for the occasional towing. Also, as some have pointed out GM has had some trans issues in the mid 2000's. But, being that it’s a GM, they’ve used essentially the same transmission since time began, so finding a shop to work on it and/or replacement parts isn’t really a big deal if anything ever breaks on it.

That’s a nice review, the only problem is they ditched it at 90k so I don’t know how it performed with 60k more miles than that.

It’ll be better than the 3.0 V6 Ranger I towed it with last... talk about paying attention (which I do like a maniac while towing anyhow).
For the record despite the fact that I could barely do 65 mph on the highway with that Ranger it had a tow package and was rated to I believe 7100 pounds. Which is idiotic.

I have 140k on my I6 4x4 TB, nothing major. An hvac actuator, 1 ignition coil. The 5.3 should be even more reliable.
Interior is fine with me, but I was born without the part of the brain that differentiates a nice interior from a bad one. That or every other person on here is a proffesional interior decorator.
Next one will be a 2wd TB SS!

Well, the guy jumped through an O at the end of it, it must be legit.
And the Ranger towed it. It was loaded with stuff inside the trailer and a bit in the bed too. It just ran out of grunt at 65mph

Probably would’ve kept on going because my grandfather is very keen on upkeep of the vehicles. Probably would’ve kept it had my grandmother not wanted something new. It was pretty much just about as clean as it was the day they bought it.

I sit in a lot of cars every day at work and I’ve seen a bunch of these. To be honest, the interior sucks. The fake wood trim is the worst and everything feels plasticky and cheap. It’s old GM at it’s finest haha
The powertrain will last a lifetime if you take car of it though. Nothing beats a GM V8. As long as you can deal with a borderline crap interior, I’d say go for it. It’s a great price.

My mum has 2003 Envoy XL with 210k miles. Okay, here we go:
1. Engine blew at 145k.
2. Tailgate started rusting at at 160k.
3. Headlight washers died at 161k.
4. Driver’s door electronics shorted out at 163k.
5. Rear wiper stopped working at 165k.
6. Spare tyre mechanism stopped working at 170k.
7. Air suspension failed completely by 175k.
8. Front right wheel bearing replaced twice in 30k.
9. Front right tie rod ends replaced three times from 2010-2015.
10. Left front wheel bearing replaced twice in 30k.
11. Frame started rusting at 180k.
12. Cooling fan and water pump failed at 201k.
13. OnStar broken since 170k.
14. HVAC system (A/C, temperature gauges, sensors, everything but the blower itself) failed at 170k. It now only works in two modes: Blazing hot and lukewarm.
15. Heated seats shorted out at 180k.
16. Third brake light and rear deck spoiler blew off in traffic at 190k.
17. Bulbs (brakes and headlights) blow out every 4 months.
Personally, I like the looks of the Envoy, and the Vortec engine sounds pretty awesome when you’re at WOT, but god is it a maintenance nightmare. The engine is quite literally the only part of my mum’s car that actually works as designed, and that’s only because it’s the car’s second damned engine.

second, what motor was this? everything in this gen from GM was a “vortec”
third, there was a recall on the lighting issues
fourth, sounds like a lotta shit is going to break.

I’m addicted to the British spelling of everything! :D
Vortec 4200! The new engine is the later variant with a little more power.
Also you’re right about the recalls...Unfortunately, none of those electrical recalls apply to the 2003 model year, despite it clearly being an affected vehicle.
Although I do have to say, 160k before everything failing isn’t too bad.
